Athina Giannakoula holds a PhD in EU criminal law obtained at the Law School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece). She is an External Associate at the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology of the Aristotle University’s Law School and a lawyer, enlisted in the Larissa Bar Association (Greece).

She is a Member of the Teaching Staff of the National School of Judges (Greece), teaching European Criminal Law. She has participated in European comparative law projects and in the national 'Counter-Radicalisation and Extremism' project. She is also a member of the European Criminal Policy Initiative, the European Criminal Law Academic Network and the Research Institute for Transparency, Corruption and Financial Crime. Giannakoula has researched and published on European criminal law, terrorism, EU security policy, human trafficking, personal data protection and the criminal liability of political decision-makers.
