Brkan is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law (Department for International and European Law) of the University of Maastricht.

Prior to that, she worked as a référéndaire in the cabinet of Judge dr Marko Ilešic at the Court of Justice of the EU from 2011 to 2013 and, from 2007 to 2011, as a référéndaire in the cabinet of Advocate General prof dr Verica Trstenjak.

She graduated in 2003 with distinction from University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and obtained an LLM from New York University School of Law in 2004. In 2007, she was awarded a PhD from University of Ljubljana.

She has published two monographs in Slovenian in the field of EU law: 'EU law: constitutional, procedural and commercial law of the EU' (co-authored with Prof Dr V Trstenjak, Ljubljana: GV Založba, 2012) and 'Legal Aspects of EU Foreign Policy' (Ljubljana: GV Založba, 2009). Her bibliography includes a number of lectures at different universities in Europe, articles in various European legal journals as well as chapters in several books on various topics linked to EU law.

Brkan serves on the ELI Membership Committee.
