Maria Kaiafa-Gbandi teaches criminal law and international and European criminal law at the Law Faculty of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and at the National Academy of Judges and Prosecutors. She is currently President of the Commission for post-graduate studies of the Law Faculty.

Kaiafa-Gbandi has received numerous academic scholarships, amongst them from the 'Alexander von Humboldt' Foundation (Germany) and Fulbright Foundation (nomination as a primary candidate in 2012 for conducting research as a visiting scholar at Harvard Law School).

Her positions include (amongst others): member of the Special Supreme Court (Anotato Eidiko Dikastirio, terms: 20042005, 20082009 and 20122013); member of the Board of the National Academy of Judges and Prosecutors (20112013); member of the Central Scientific Council for Treating Victimization and Juvenile Delinquency (KESATHEA), which functions as a consulting council to the Greek Minister of Justice; member of the Executive Council of the 'Dimitris Tsatsos Institute for European Constitutional Studies' of the Law Faculty and the Faculty of Culture and Social Sciences' (Hagen University-Germany, since 2008); founding member of the European Academic Research Group 'European Criminal Policy Initiative-ECPI', which has published two Manifestos on European Criminal Law, co-editor of the 'European Criminal Law Review-EuCLR' journal (since 2011); and co-director of different series of publications in criminal law, medical law and bioethics.
