Croatian Hub Held the 12th Webinar in its Webinar Series

15.02.2022

On 15 February 2022, the ELI Croatian Hub held its 12th webinar in a series of webinars organised to contribute to discussions on current ELI projects and recent developments in Croatian, comparative, and EU law. The webinar gathered forty participants from Croatia, composed of mostly notaries and other legal practitioners.

The webinar opened with a welcome address from Mr Zoran Hačić (ELI Croatian Hub Co-Chair; Attorney-at-Law and Managing Partner in Hačić & Bošnjak Law Firm, Zagreb), and was followed by a lecture on the ‘Application of the EU Succession Regulation in Practice: Jurisdiction and Applicable Law in Matters of Succession with a Third-Country Element and the European Certificate of Succession’, delivered by Ms Nives Grubišić Đogić (Judge at the Novi Zagreb Municipal Court, National Contact Point of the European Judicial Network in Civil and Commercial Matters).

Following a brief introduction to the aims and scope of the EU Succession Regulation, Judge Grubišić Đogić discussed the rules governing jurisdiction and applicable law in matters of succession with a third-country element, which are of particular importance for the Republic of Croatia considering that it borders several non-Member States. Judge Grubišić Đogić gave an overview of the relevant case law of the Court of Justice and discussed a couple of recent decisions of the Croatian courts. The lecture focused in particular on various problems encountered in legal practice in Croatia in connection to the effects of the European Certificate of Succession, especially those relating to recording succession property in the land register.

The presentation was followed by a lively Q&A session.

The next ELI Croatian Hub webinar will be held on 15 March 2022.
