Conference programme: Zagreb Law of Obligations Conference (ELI Croatian Hub & ELI Global Private Law SIG event)

The 2nd Zagreb International Conference on the Law of Obligations was held in Zagreb on 28–30 September 2022.

The Department of Law at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics and Business organised the conference in partnership with the ELI Croatian Hub and the ELI Global Private Law SIG, and with the support of the Croatian Chamber of Economy and International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Croatia.

The conference gathered 58 speakers from Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Kosovo, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Türkiye, and the United Kingdom, who presented 52 papers in nine sessions dealing with the following topics:

  • Contract Law and the Digital Single Market: The transposition of the Sale of Goods Directive (SGD) and the Digital Content and Services Directive (DCSD) into National Laws of EU Member States
  • The Law of Obligations in Central and Southeast Europe: The Influence of Austrian, German, and Swiss Law
  • Croatian Law of Obligations in a Comparative Law Context: The Reform and Modernisation of the Croatian Obligations Act.

At the opening of the conference, welcoming speeches were delivered by Dr Ivan Tot (University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics and Business; ELI Croatian Hub Co-Chair and Head of the Organising Committee), Professor Zvonimir Slakoper (University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics and Business; Head of the Scientific Committee), Professor Jurica Pavičić (Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Zagreb) and Dr Albert Ruda (Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Girona; ELI Global Private Law SIG Co-Chair).

The keynote speakers were Professor Paula Giliker (University of Bristol, School of Law) on 'The Challenges of Transposing (and Not Transposing) the DCSD and SGD into Common Law Jurisdictions: Ireland and Post-Brexit England and Wales' and Professor Tatjana Josipović (University of Zagreb, Faculty of Law) who delivered a speech on 'Legal Transplants as a Tool for Modernisation of the Law of Obligations'.

In the framework of the conference, a joint ELI Croatian Hub and ELI Global Private Law SIG Members Meeting took place on 29 September. The meeting was chaired by Dr Albert Ruda (ELI Global Private Law SIG Co-Chair), Dr Ivan Tot (ELI Croatian Hub Co-Chair), Professor Tatjana Josipović (ELI Croatian Hub Advisory Board Member), Professor Hana Horak (ELI Croatian Hub Advisory Board Member) and Zoran Hačić (ELI Croatian Hub Co-Chair). At the meeting, current and prospective ELI members were informed about the mission and activities of the ELI, recent ELI project outcomes, current and upcoming ELI projects, and the activities of the ELI Global Private Law SIG and the ELI Croatian Hub. In the lively discussions that followed, the Chairs informed conference attendees about the various ways they can actively engage in the work of the ELI.
