Dr Ivan Tot (ELI Croatian Hub Co-Chair; Assistant Professor at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics and Business), who opened the webinar, introduced the speaker and the topic of the webinar.
The introduction was followed by a lecture on ‘The Main Challenges to a (More) Efficient Enforcement of Competition Rules in Croatia: Future Outlook’, delivered by Jasminka Pecotić Kaufman (Professor; University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics and Business; President of the Croatian Competition Law and Policy Association).
In her lecture, Professor Pecotić Kaufman first gave an introduction to the rationale of competition rules and the relationship between competition and democracy. She examined the reasons why competition law topics in Croatia have never been at the forefront of political and legal discussion, despite the sound institutional and normative framework that exists. She addressed several challenges to a more effective enforcement of competition law rules in Croatia, particularly those in the realm of competition culture. Professor Pecotić Kaufman’s findings have recently been published in an article entitled ‘On the Development of (not so) New Competition Systems—Findings from an Empirical Study on Croatia’, Journal of Antitrust Enforcement, available here.
The lecture was followed by a lively Q&A session.
The next ELI Croatian Hub webinar will be held on 17 May 2022.
