ELI-Mt Scopus European Standards of Judicial Independence Discussed in Cyprus

On 14 December 2024, the ELI-Mt Scopus European Standards of Judicial Independence were featured at the 4th Annual Symposium of the Procedural Law Unit.

The event, titled ‘Judicial Delays Threatening the Rule of Law’, brought together key stakeholders to discuss the quality of civil justice in Cyprus. Among the distinguished attendees were Nicos Tornaritis, Chairman of the Committee on Legal Affairs; Rea Limnatitou, Director of the Cyprus Judicial Training School; and Louiza Zannettou, Law Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus.

During the symposium, Prof Dr Sophie Turenne and Prof Dr Shimon Shetreet, Co-Reporters of the ELI project, presented the recently published ELI-Mt Scopus European Standards of Judicial Independence. Their presentation provided a platform for engaging discussions with judges, policymakers, and lawyers, highlighting the Standards' relevance to strengthening judicial independence and addressing challenges in civil justice.
