ELI Vice-President Sjef van Erp Meets ULC Presidents

ELI Vice-President Sjef van Erp attended the annual meeting of the US Uniform Law Commission (ULC), held from 12 to 18 July in Anchorage, Alaska. Van Erp had the chance to speak with, among others, the outgoing President Anita Ramasastry and incoming ULC President Carl Lisman.

Monday, 15 July was the day devoted in part to international cooperation. During an international breakfast van Erp had the pleasure of meeting the new ULC Executive Director Tim Schnabel, who is quite familiar with the work done by the ELI. Schnabel served as an attorney in the State Department’s Office of the Legal Adviser from 2008 through 2018. The breakfast meeting was followed by a brief presentation of ELI’s projects to the full meeting of commissioners.

A representative from the Uniform Law Conference of Canada and one from the State Department also gave brief overviews of their activities regarding, respectively, the work on uniform Acts and developments around private international law treaties. An international reception and dinner concluded the day.

During its annual meeting, the ULC discussed several drafts. In particular, the Uniform Tort Law Relating to Drones Act, the Fundraising through Public Appeals Act and the Uniform Automated Operation of Vehicles Act drew plenty attention with the latter Act being approved.
