The ELI's Home in Vienna

The Secretariat of the ELI, which is hosted by the University of Vienna, is tasked to support the competent bodies of the Institute. It is located at Schottenring 16 (at the old stock exchange) in the heart of Vienna. It is close to the main building of the University, the Law Faculty building, the representation of the European Commission in Austria as well as the information office of the European Parliament.

Small meetings with up to 15 participants can be organised at the ELI Secretariat. For bigger meetings, the ELI different venues can be organised. We are located at:

Secretary General

Dr Vanessa Wilcox, LLM (Cantab) is the Secretary General of the ELI. Dr Wilcox holds a Master’s Degree in Commercial Law (LLM) from the University of Cambridge (2006) and a Doctoral Degree from the University of Vienna (2014), for which she won the Dr Maria Schaumayer-Stiftung Prize (2015) and the Association of Austrian Bankers Prize (2016). Among other things, Dr Wilcox is a Fellow of the European Centre of Tort and Insurance Law (ECTIL, since 2009) and is an Honorary Professor of Yantai University Law School (China, since 2015). She lectures at the University of Vienna and has held positions at other universities in Austria and abroad. Her role as Secretary General includes enhancing the ELI's network, establishing contacts with other institutions and raising awareness of the ELI and its work. She is also in charge of the coordination of the Secretariat's work and the organisation of events and maintains close contact with ELI Bodies. Dr Wilcox can be reached here.

Administrative Officer

Jasmina Mrkonjic is a full-time Administrative Officer at the ELI Secretariat. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in European Economy and Leadership from the University of Applied Sciences bfi Vienna (Austria) and is currently writing her Master's thesis, which deals with the topic of interest groups in the EU multilevel-system. Jasmina previously worked for four years at an international consulting company, where she was able to generate knowledge in tax issues. Project Officer

Ala Šabanovič is a Project Officer at the ELI Secretariat. She holds a Master’s degree in law from the University of Gdansk and an Advanced Master's degree in the European Interdisciplinary Studies from the College of Europe. She is currently pursuing doctoral studies in Law at the University of Vienna. Ala is responsible for the management of the following ELI projects: ELI-UNIDROIT joint project From Transnational Principles to European Rules of Civil Procedure; Principles for a Data Economy; Business and Human Rights: Access to Justice and Effective Remedies; and Detention of Asylum Seekers and Irregular Migrants and the Rule of Law. She is also a liaison person in the Secretariat for the Dispute Resolution SIG and the Business and Financial Law SIG. Ala can be contacted here

Project Officer

Tomasz Dudek is a Project Officer at the ELI Secretariat. He holds a Master of Laws degree and an MA in International Relations from the University of Warsaw. He has worked for the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), the Polish Ombudsperson Office and several human rights NGOs, including the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights. Tomasz is responsible for the management of the following ELI projects: Common Constitutional Traditions in Europe, Empowering European Families: Towards More Party Autonomy in European Family and Succession Law; The Principled Relationship of Formal and Informal Justice through the Courts and Alternative Dispute Resolution; Draft Model Rules on Online Intermediary Platforms; For a European Approach to R&D Expenses Qualifying for the Common Corporate Tax Base (CCTB) Super Deduction; and a Feasibility study: Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets. He is also a liaison person in the Secretariat for the Digital Law SIG, the Intellectual Property Law SIG and the Family and Succession Law SIG. Tomasz can be contacted here.

Project Officer

Aline Carruet is a Project Officer at the ELI Secretariat. She holds an MA in Human Rights from the University of Vienna and an MSC in International Development and Humanitarian Emergencies from the London School of Economics (LSE). She has previously worked for the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) and has prior experience in working for human rights NGOs as well as United Nations organisations including the United NationsChildren's Fund (UNICEF), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA). Aline is responsible for the management of the following ELI current and prospective Projects: Empowering European families, Draft Model Rules on Online Intermediary Platforms, Protection of Adults in International Situations, Principles of Liability in Digitalised Environments and Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets. She is also a liaison person for the Administrative Law SIG, Competition Law SIG, Global Private Law SIG and Fundamental Rights Law SIG. Aline can be contacted here.

Communications Officer

Dr Doris Ladewig is a Communications Officer at the ELI Secretariat. She holds a Master's degree and doctorate in Communication Science from the University of Vienna and a Post Graduate in Marketing & Advertising from the Vienna University of Economics and Business. Doris has worked as Head of Corporate Communications for leading multi-national companies in Austria, Germany and Central and Eastern Europe. For ten years she was also a lecturer in communications at the Salzburg University. At the European Law Institute she is responsible for Communications and is a liaison person in the Secretariat for the Administrative Law SIG. Doris can be contacted here.

Sebastian Schwamberger is an Austrian lawyer who works at the Department of Civil Law at the University of Vienna. He is responsible for the MyELI platform and supports the Secretariat in IT issues. Sebastian can be reached here.
