The focus of the seminar was on (digital) product passports, which are a fresh conceptual construct from sustainable engineering science as part of the circular economy. Digital product passports are expected to close information gaps between stakeholders along the material or product value chain in order to enable sustainable business strategies. In its Ecodesign Regulation proposal of March 2022, the European Commission set up a framework for the adoption of digital product passports for virtually all products to be placed on the market.
At the crossroad of the ‘circular’ and the ‘data’ economy, digital product passports have been little discussed in the legal literature (if at all). Based on the Ecodesign Regulation proposal, this event offered a roadmap for the analysis of digital product passports, with an anchoring in data economy-related research.
