The American Law Institute (ALI)-ELI Principles for the Governance of Biometrics project, launched in January 2025, seeks to develop a coherent transatlantic framework for the responsible use of biometric technologies. The first draft of the Principles was discussed at an ALI Advisers meeting held in Philadelphia on 23 October 2025 and subsequently reviewed by the ELI Advisers during the above remote meeting.
During the meeting, Project Reporters Professor Gianclaudio Malgieri and Professor Nita Farahany presented the draft. Advisers provided valuable feedback on terminology, scope, and the balance between innovation and safeguards. The Reporters will take these comments into account in preparing the next version of the draft.
