On 13 March 2014, the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) and ELI signed a Memorandum of Understanding, constituting the framework for the joint cooperation of the two organisations in the project for the development of Model European Rules of Civil Procedure, based on the American Law Institute-UNIDROIT Principles of Transnational Civil Procedure.

The ELI-UNIDROIT Model European Rules of Civil Procedure were completed in 2020 and published by Oxford University Press in 2021. They have since been translated into French and Spanish. Translations Chinese, German, Russian, Ukrainian, Italian, Farsi, Hungarian and Portuguese are underway.

The signing of this MoU is testament to the effective and mutually advantageous nine year-long cooperation between the two organisations. Under it both parties will continue to cooperate in the promotion of the joint instrument as well as through mutual participation as observers in project meetings and governing bodies’ sessions.

This is a step forward towards intensifying the parties’ long-standing relations.
