ELI Charter of Fundamental Constitutional Principles Presented in Brussels

23.05.2025

The Charter was presented at the conference entitled ‘The Rule of Law in Question: Foundations, Challenges and European Perspectives’, which took place on 23 May 2025 in Palais des Académies in Brussels.

Professor Elise Muir, Co-Reporter of the ELI Charter, outlined its significance in a presentation on ‘The Rule of Law as a Set of Common Values for European Democracies: Introducing the Charter of Fundamental Constitutional Principles of a European Democracy’. Her presentation underscored the Charter’s role in articulating core constitutional principles vital to democratic governance across Europe.

The conference brought together experts and officials to reflect on the evolving notion of the rule of law, particularly amid growing pressures on rights protection, judicial independence, and the regulation of digital innovation. Participants examined its philosophical roots and practical implications, especially through the lens of jurisprudence from the Court of Justice of the European Union and the European Court of Human Rights.

ELI’s Charter, developed under the leadership of Professor Dr Elise Muir and Professor Dr Takis Tridimas, is available here.
