The event commenced with a warm welcome address from Dr Ivan Tot (ELI Croatian Hub Co-Chair; Assistant Professor at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Economics and Business, Department of Business Law). This was followed by an insightful lecture on ‘The Hague Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters – An Opportunity to Facilitate Cross-border Recognition in the Region?’, delivered by Professor Meliha Povlakić (ELI Council Member, Head of Department of Civil Law at the University of Sarajevo, Faculty of Law).

During her presentation, Professor Povlakić discussed the current status of cross-border judicial cooperation in civil and commercial matters among the Southeast European countries. She highlighted the key features of the Convention of 2 July 2019 on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Judgments in Civil or Commercial Matters (HCCH 2019 Judgments Convention). The focus of the lecture was on the potential benefits that the ratification of the 2019 HCCH Judgments Convention by all countries in the region could bring in terms of facilitating the recognition of judgments in civil and commercial matters.
