24.05.2023

This year marked the centenary of the American Law Institute (ALI). Founded on 23 February 1923, the ALI went on to inspire and support the foundation of ELI.

ELI’s President, Prof Dr Pascal Pichonnaz, Vice-President, Lord John Thomas, and Scientific Director, Prof Dr Christiane Wendehorst, joined the ALI centennial celebrations, which took place in the context of the ALI Annual Meeting from 22–24 May in Washington DC.

A Council dinner on 21 May preceded the celebrations. On the occasion, former ALI Director, Ricky Revesz’s achievements in his nine years in office where showcased. Revesz now serves as head of the White House OMB’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.

The Annual Meeting was opened by ALI President David F Levi, who reflected on the history of the Institute, its work, and the dedication of the ALI membership to the rule of law.

Recently appointed ALI Director, Diane P Wood, provided her first report as ALI Director, among other things, reflecting on ALI’s partnership with ELI which includes the ALI-ELI Principles for a Data Economy: Data Transactions and Data Rights. The latter is due to be published with ALI’s publisher, Thomson Reuters, soon.

Among the highlights of the festivities were speeches by Chief Justice John G Roberts and Supreme Court Associate Justice Elena Kagan.

First-ranked speakers sat in a series of panels on ALI’s current projects. Wood masterfully chaired all the panels on the Restatements projects on the agenda. An overview on the event can be found here and here.
