ELI Represented at a Panel on Judicial Independence at the 2023 World Law Congress

On 20 July 2023, ELI’s President, Pascal Pichonnaz, and members of the ELI-Mt Scopus Standards of Judicial Independence Project Team, spoke at the 2023 World Law Congress in New York.

The panel was chaired by Prof Dr Shimon Shetreet (Co-Reporter of the ELI-Mt Scopus Standards of Judicial Independence project). Other panellists from within the project were Prof Dr Sophie Turenne  (Co-Reporter) and Prof Dr Giuseppe Ferrari (Advisory Committee Member). Prof Dr Angelika Nussberger (Former Vice-President of the European Court of Human Rights (2017–2019)), President Milton Ray Guevara (World Law Foundation Trustee, President of the Dominican Republic Constitutional Court), President M'hammed Abdenabaoui (President delegate of the Supreme Council of the Judiciary of Morocco), Justice Gonçalo Almeida Ribeiro (Vice-President of the Constitutional Court of Portugal), Justice Carmen Corral Ponce (Vice-President of the Constitutional Court of Ecuador), Prof Dr Zheng TANG (Professor at Law, Associate Dean at Wuhan University Academy of International Law, and Global Governance) were externals that enriched to panel.

The World Law Congress brings together different organisations and institutions that hold their own panels. It is held biennially within the framework of the World Jurist Association (WJA). For two days, 20–21 July 2023, global leaders, including heads of State, authorities, justices from supranational and national high courts, policy makers, academics, lawyers, activists, and students, discussed a wide variety of current topics to which the legal community proposed solutions. Among those present were King Felipe of Spain, Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, and President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. More information is available here.
