ELI Turkish Hub Held a Webinar on the ELI Principles on Blockchain Technology, Smart Contracts and Consumer Protection

On 8 June 2023, the ELI Turkish Hub held the second webinar in a series of webinars organised to introduce ELI projects to Turkish lawyers and discuss their potential influence on Turkish Law. The webinar gathered 20 participants.

The webinar opened with a welcome address from Prof Kadir Berk Kapancı (ELI Turkish Hub Co-Chair; MEF University, Istanbul) and was followed by a detailed presentation of the ELI Principles on Blockchain Technology, Smart Contracts and Consumer Protection by Ms Nesli Şen Özçelik Özer (Research Assistant at MEF University, Istanbul) who also translated the ELI Principles to Turkish. Discussions were led by Prof Pınar Çağlayan Aksoy (Bilkent University, Ankara) and Prof Ekin Ömeroğlu (Kadir Has University, Istanbul). Prof Pınar Çağlayan Aksoy, who was also in the MCC of the Project, identified the obstacles to the widespread use of smart contracts. Subsequently, Prof Ekin Ömeroğlu delivered a lecture on blockchain technologies and smart contracts under Turkish law and explored possible dispute resolution mechanisms.

The lectures were followed by a lively Q&A session, during which participants discuss various problems including the inclusion of a kill switch and the conflict resolution in consumer disputes in the context of blockchain technologies and smart contracts.
