ELI Welcomes Progress on the Right to Repair at the EU Level

22.11.2023

On 22 November 2023, the Council of the European Union agreed on its negotiating mandate on a proposed directive on common rules promoting the repair of goods. It will form a basis for further discussions with the European Parliament on the final text of the directive.

ELI welcomes this development as it continuously supports EU institutions in designing effective mechanisms that will enable a more circular economy and therefore, a cleaner future.

Among its major activities in the field, ELI participated in the European Commission’s Public Consultations in the form of its Response on Sustainable Consumption of Goods – Promoting Repair and Reuse. The Response fed into the proposal, which the European Commission tabled on 22 March 2023 as part of the New Consumer Agenda and the Circular Economy Action Plan. Shortly after, ELI provided its Feedback on the European Commission’s Proposal for a Directive on Common Rules Promoting the Repair of Goods.

Two webinars to disseminate its proposals and to engage key stakeholders in this important discussion took place in January and July 2023. They are available here and here.
