Hungarian Hub’s Conference on the Present and Future of ISDS

25.06.2021

On 25 June 2021, the ELI Hungarian HUB and Eötvös Loránd University Faculty of Law (Budapest, Hungary) organised an online conference on the present and future of ISDS (investor-state dispute settlement).

The aim of the conference was to discuss some of the current issues of ISDS as well as to look at possible future developments. The event was attended by more than 120 participants – academics, practitioners, arbitrators, students – from Europe and beyond.

The conference was opened by Professor Miklós Király, who is the Chair of the ELI Hungarian Hub. The welcome address was followed by the first session, where André Von Walter (Team Leader for Investment Law, Investment Dispute Settlement, European Commission) talked about the EU’s approach to the reform of investor-state dispute settlement, and Venetia Argyropoulou (European University Cyprus) discussed the recent developments and current challenges for ISDS in the EU.

The second session was devoted to the assessment of possible future global scenarios. The panel, composed of Margie-Lys Jaime (University of Panama), Peter Riznik (Konrad Partners, Vienna, Austria) and Csaba Kovács (Arbitrator, CMS, London, UK), examined the trends and developments in international investment law, the reform improvements, and whether a World Investment Court could solve the current and possible future problems. The sessions were followed by Q&As.

The webinar was the first event in a series of conferences devoted to ISDS and international investment law. Further events will follow in autumn. If you are interested in this or future events, please contact the ELI Hungarian Hub for further information.
