Obituary: Ole Lando

25.04.2019

The European Law Institute is very sad to report the passing of Professor Ole Lando, who died on 5 April at the age of 96.

Professor Lando was a Founding Member of the ELI. He was a leading private international lawyer, but he is best known for the Principles of European Contract Law – it was Lando who established and led the three ‘Commissions on European Contract Law’ that produced the Principles. They have been highly influential in the development of both EU and national contract laws.

Ole Lando will also be remembered by his colleagues for his warmth, kindness and openness to ideas – and also for a wonderful sense of humor. All members of the ELI will miss him enormously and send deepest sympathy to his family.

A fuller obituary can be read in the ELI newsletter on pages 12–14. Meanwhile, colleagues who would like to share reminiscences of Ole or pay their own tribute to him are warmly invited to send their messages (and also appropriate photographs of Ole) to the ELI Secretariat, who will make them available on this website.
