Presentation of the ELI Project on Advance Choices at FL-EUR Conference

24.11.2023

The ELI project on Advance Choices for Future Disablement was presented by Co-Reporter Adrian Ward at a Family Law in Europe: Academic Network’s (FL-EUR) Conference on European Pathways for Supporting and Protecting Adults, which took place on 24 November 2023 in Amsterdam.

Ward spoke at a session on ‘Comparative and other Research Projects’.  With the ELI project still at an early stage, he invited observations and criticisms from anyone who had them.  Although the event itself lasted one day, many participants, including participants in the ELI project and other experts interested in it, had extended discussions in the following days, all contributing to the quality and content of discussions ahead as the project proceeds further into largely unexplored areas of law-making.

It was notable that presentations from European Commission at both this and an earlier Alzheimer Association Academy online event on 13 November 2023 showed the influence of ELI’s Response to the Commission’s public consultation on the ‘Initiative on the Cross-Border Protection of Vulnerable Adults’.  The case advanced by ELI for an online register of powers of representation has been picked up in the form of proposed inter-connectivity between national registers.  ELI’s proposal that the use of advance directives also be promoted appears to be generally supported.
