Promotion of the ELI’s ‘Detention of Asylum Seekers and Irregular Migrants and the Rule of Law: Checklists and European Standards’ by Slovenian Hub Members in 2018 and 2019

The ELI’s ‘Detention of Asylum Seekers and Irregular Migrants and the Rule of Law: Checklists and European Standards’ was promoted by Slovenian Hub members during several conferences, workshops, meetings and in publications.

Boštjan Zalar, the Project Reporter of the ELI project on Detention of Asylum Seekers and Irregular Migrants and the Rule of Law: Checklists and European Standards, promoted the output during international scientific or judicial conferences, workshops, meetings and in publications, including during the Joint Conference of the International Association of Refugee and Migration Judges (IARMJ) Europe and Scuola Superiore Delia Magistratura (SSM) on ‘The Right to the Effective Judicial Protection under Asylum Law’ in Catania, Sicily (12–14 September 2018). He also presented it at the High Judicial Roundtable with the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), the International Association of Refugee Law Judges (IARMJ)-Europe, the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) organised by EASO and IARMJ-Europe at the CJEU in Luxembourg (23–23 November 2018). The output was also promoted at a workshop for judges organised by National Judicial Academy and NGO (Hrvatski pravni centre in Zagreb) on ‘Case Study on the Detention of Vulnerable Asylum Seekers’ (4 December 2018), the Annual meeting of the EASO Networks of Court and Tribunals, Moot Court Session on ‘Detention of Applicants for International Protection’ in Malta (21–22 January 2019) and the Trento University, training project for judges ‘Fundamental Rights in Courts and Regulation’ (FRICore), funded by Justice Programme of the EU (4–5 March 2019).

 

Zalar’s speech on ‘The Power of Human Rights Argument in Court Proceedings’ that was delivered at the ‘Days of Attorneys at Law’ event in Portorož in Slovenia (on 22 March 2019) which referred to the ELI’s output, will be published in the ‘Odvetnik’ (Attorney at Law) legal journal. Moreover, his paper, ‘Impact of Judicial Dialogue(s) on Development and Affirmation of the Right to Effective Legal Remedy from Articles 13 and 14 of the Return Directive’, with references to the ELI’s output, prepared for the Conference on the Law of Judicial Dialogue on the Return of Irregular Migrants from the European Union at Masaryk University in Brno on 7 September 2018, will be published in a book by Hart Publishing, Oxford.
