On Thursday, 4 November 2021, ELI’s Secretary General, Dr Vanessa Wilcox, welcomed a delegation from Ukraine to the Secretariat.

Among the visitors were Prof Iryna Izarova who is an ELI Member and is currently translating the ELI-UNIDROIT (International Institute for the Unification of Private Law) Model European Rules of Civil Procedure into Ukrainian. The Rules, which are already available in French, are also being translated into German, Spanish, Chinese, Russian and possibly Farsi. Prof Izarova was joined by Prof Dr Yurii Prytyka (Head of the Civil Procedure Department of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv), Prof Dr Nelli Golubeva (Head of the Civil Procedure Department of Odessa National Law University), Dr Serhii Chvankin (Head of the Local Court in Odessa), Dr Serhii Kravtsov (Assoc Prof of the National Law University) and Dr Olena Terekh (Assoc Prof of Civil Procedure at Taras Shevchenko National University, Kyiv).

ELI's Secretary General informed those present about ELI and its project and other activities. Those present from the Secretariat were also informed of the work of some of the above organisations in Ukraine.

The ELI-UNIDROIT Model European Rules of Civil Procedure aim was to establish a frame of reference in civil procedure law for policymakers both at European and national levels. The Rules are general enough to be acceptable to all European States, but at the same time specific enough to promote common standards that allow an increase of mutual trust. They have attracted the interest of EU institutions such as the European Commission and was subject to in-depth analysis, inter alia, in working documents drafted by the Committee on Legal Affairs of the European Parliament (JURI) and the Policy Department for Citizens’ Rights and Constitutional Affairs of the European Parliament.
