Legal Advice to International Couples in Europe Conference in Trier (Germany)

30.11.2017

30 November–1 December 2017: the European Law Institute (ELI) is pleased to invite you to the Legal Advice to International Couples in Europe Conference, which will take place from 30 November—1 December 2017 in Trier (Germany).

About the Project

The Empowering European Families: Towards More Party Autonomy in Family and Succession Law Project, embarked on by the ELI, the University of Vienna and the University of Utrecht (the latter two being beneficiaries of an EU Action Grant for this Project), aims at raising awareness of the intricacies that come with being an international couple, or with moving across borders as a family, in the EU. More specifically, it aims at facilitating the free movement of citizens by developing contract templates concerning issues such as property, maintenance, and pension rights, including aspects of choice of law and choice of court, which couples and their legal advisers may use to express their choices and have better certainty about their rights and obligations when moving abroad. It will also develop contract templates for informal relationships in the EU (cohabitation agreements).

Legal Advice to International Couples in Europe Conference

For two days, national and international family law experts will share the output of their research on the above Project and discuss the challenges facing international couples in that legal area. Among other things, attention will be given to EEF model contracts on property, maintenance and pension in the context of marriages and registered partnerships and checklists which the Team drafted for legal advisors will also be discussed, as will the issues property relations, unjust enrichment and relationship-generated disadvantages for informal relationships.

The conference will appeal to lawyers, notaries, staff members of EU institutions, ministry officials, academics working in the field of international and cross-border family law, family law judges, in-house counsel, etc.
