The aim of this roundtable was to gather expert input that will inform the work of the intergovernmental Steering Committee on Democracy (CDDEM), which is developing parameters for the application and the implementation of the Reykjavík Principles for Democracy and in that sense helping Council of Europe Member States to self-assess the state and quality of their democracies.
Experts were tasked with providing insights on the potential format, content, and application of these parameters. The results of the discussions will contribute directly to the intergovernmental efforts of the Council of Europe, guiding both the development of the parameters and the methodology to assess their practical implementation.
Prof Dr Takis Tridimas was invited in his capacity as a Co-Reporter of the ELI Charter of Fundamental Constitutional Principles of a European Democracy and his involvement highlights the ELI Charter’s influential role in shaping Europe's democratic future.
The CDDEM was established as a result of the commitment by the Heads of State and Government of the Council of Europe at their 4th Summit in Reykjavik 2023 to secure and strengthen democracy, as embodied in the Reykjavik Principles for Democracy.
