While these Principles are intended to be of a preliminary nature for such a fast-moving field – and neither exhaustive nor final – they aim to balance the interests of various parties involved with, or affected by, the development or deployment of Generative AI (‘Gen AI’), while fostering innovation and promoting responsible development of AI technologies.

The Principles are complemented by an in-depth report that explores existing legal frameworks covering the Generative AI lifecycle in the European Union, the United States, and Japan. The report was made available to the GPAI Experts at the GPAI Summit in Belgrade, Serbia, earlier this month.

Both the Principles and the report are the product of a collaborative effort between ELI, represented by lead authors Prof Dr Alain Strowel and Prof Dr Sebastian Schwamberger, and the Cogen Project Group, wider Data Governance Working Group of GPAI and with feedback from ELI Advisory Committee and Observer. The project and collaboration was coordinated by GPAI Expert Support Centre CEIMIA  – Center D’Expertise International de Montréal en Intelligence Artificielle, with the support of ELI.
