High Level Expert Group Meetings on Justice and Gender Discrimination

17.02.2023

On 27 January and 17 February 2023, ELI organised High Level Expert Group (HLEG) meetings on Justice and Gender Discrimination, which were chaired by the Right Honourable Lady Justice Carr DBE. Representatives of various organisations and leading experts from academia discussed this broad theme, with a view of recommending a more specific topic for a prospective ELI project in the field.

During the first meeting participants discussed the topics they submitted in advance, which were grouped under the three themes: (a) Gender based violence; (b) Access to justice for vulnerable women, non-binary and trans persons; and (c) Gender stereotypes, representation and biases in the legal professions and judiciary. The second meeting provided an opportunity to discuss those in more depth and prepare a recommendation for ELI bodies.

Lorena Bachmaier Winter (Professor, Complutense University of Madrid, ELI Council Member), Raquel Borges Blazquez (Assistant Professor, University of Valencia), Clemence Bouquemont Da Costa (Deputy Secretary of the CEPEJ Responsible for Cooperation, Secretary of the Working group on quality of justice (GT-QUAL)), Laura Carlson (President, European Women Lawyers Association (EWLA)), The Right Honourable Lady Justice Carr DBE (Judge of the Court of Appeal in England and Wales), Ralph Kass (Chair of the Bureau, Gender Equality Commission, Council of Europe), Ianina Gabriela Lipara (Secretariat Coordinator, European Judicial Network (EJN)), Elaine Mak (Professor, Utrecht University),  Jeanette Melchior (Senior Deputy Judge at Maritime&Commercial Court), Kamalia Mehtiyeva (Professor, University of Paris-Est Créteil Val-de-Marne), Alvaro Oliveira   (Senior Expert, DG JUST, European Commission), Barbara Pozzo (Professor, University of Insubria, ELI Council Member), Esther Schmidt (Member of the Legal Service, European Commission), Christel Schurrer (Deputy Secretary of the CEPEJ Responsible of the evaluation pole (GT-EVAL)), Linda Senden (Professor, European Equality Law Network); Katarzyna Sękowska-Kozłowska (Director of the Poznań Human Rights Centre of the Institute of Law Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences) and Christiane Wendehorst (Professor, University of Vienna, ELI Scientific Director) participated in the meetings.
