Croatian Hub Launches its Webinar Series

05.03.2021

On 5 March 2021, the ELI Croatian Hub held its first webinar in a series of webinars organised to contribute to the discussion on the current ELI projects and recent developments in Croatian, comparative, and EU law. The webinar gathered 30 participants, mostly legal practitioners from Croatia, but also Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo.

The webinar started with a welcome address from Dr Ivan Tot (ELI Croatian Hub Co-Chair; Assistant Professor in Commercial Law at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics and Business) who introduced the Hub’s Co-Chairs and members of the Hub’s Advisory Board, and presented the Hub’s planned activities for 2021.

The introductory speech was delivered by Professor Tatjana Josipović (ELI Council Member; Tenured Professor in Civil Law at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Law). Professor Josipović presented ELI’s core tasks, its bodies, projects, and other activities. An overview of the completed and current ELI projects was given, and upcoming projects were announced. Professor Josipović also informed the participants about the Call for Papers for the ELI Young Lawyers Award and the ELI Annual Conference and Decennial Celebration.

In the central part of the webinar, Alina Škiljić (Bardek, Lisac, Mušec, Skoko & Partners Law Firm, Zagreb), the winner of the 2020 ELI Young Lawyers Award, presented her winning paper on ‘Health Data (“Data Concerning Health”) Inferences – an Unexplored Volcano Eager to Erupt Post COVID-19 Crisis - Aligning Inferences with GDPR Principles?’. Ms Škiljić gave an overview of the most pressing risks related to drawing inferences on health data, using the example of how the hotel industry might create inferences of guests’ COVID-19 status based on the data of their origin of travel. In her presentation, Ms Škiljić dealt with how inaccurate inferences might result in unjustified different treatment of data subjects and diminish the key GDPR principles.

The presentations were followed by a Q&A session.

The next ELI Croatian Hub webinar will be held on 26 March 2021.
