The Portuguese Hub of the European Law Institute (ELI) is broadening its scope by extending its activities to Lusophone countries. This strategic expansion aims to strengthen legal harmonisation, promote best practices, and encourage dialogue between legal scholars, practitioners, and institutions within the Lusophone legal community.
Portuguese law has historically played a pivotal role in shaping the legal systems of Lusophone countries, including Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Timor-Leste. Many of these countries’ legal frameworks are rooted in the Portuguese civil law tradition, influencing areas such as contract law, corporate law, and judicial processes.
The expansion of the ELI Portuguese Hub represents a significant step in fostering a shared legal dialogue and addressing transnational legal challenges. By incorporating Lusophone legal experts and institutions into its activities, the Hub strengthens ELI’s mission of improving European legal development while acknowledging the broader global influence of European and Portuguese legal traditions.
The Hub invites legal professionals, academics, and policymakers from Lusophone countries to join it.
