ELI Insurance Law SIG Held its Eighth Transatlantic Lecture on Principles of Reinsurance Contract Law

25.01.2023

On 25 January, the SIG held a lecture entitled ‘Principles of Reinsurance Contract Law: Striving for the Improved Quality of Reinsurance Cover’ in a hybrid mode.

It was co-organised by the Principles of Reinsurance Contract Law (PRICL) Working Group, the Universities of Zurich and Frankfurt am Main as well as the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT), which hosted the event at its headquarters in Villa Aldobrandini. The aim of the lecture was to discuss the advantages the PRICL in practice.

About 50 participants turned up in person, and over 60 joined online. They were welcomed and introduced to the project and the cooperation between UNIDROIT and the PRICL Working Group by UNIDROIT Secretary-General Ignacio Tirado, Deputy Secretary-General Anna Veneziano, and Co-Leader of the project, Professor Manfred Wandt (Goethe University Frankfurt am Main).

Helmut Heiss (University of Zurich and Co-leader of the Project) followed the opening remarks with an introduction to the PRICL's mechanisms of application and a presentation of its flexibility as an instrument. Diana Cerini (University of Milan, Bicocca) focused on remedies under the PRICL and their relationship with the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (UPICC).

A discussion panel followed, featuring Rosaria Acanfora (Reinsurance Contracts and Claims Manager Generali, Italia), Lari Kuitunen (Reinsurance Manager, If P&C Insurance, Finland), and Christian Lang (General Counsel Swiss Re Corporate Solutions, Switzerland), who presented several specific examples of practical applications of the PRICL in practice.
